The Family Visits & A Wedding

My parents & sister recently flew out to attend a family friend's wedding and visit. I was SO excited. I take the bait on any chance to see them, as I only do about 3-4 times a year.

First, though, we took my mom to the Huntington Library as a late birthday surprise since my grandma and I raveeee about the tea room! One of the most "proper" English tea rooms we know. So we took her as a present, and had a great time! I thought it would be a good time to jump back into film, as school is only a month away! (And we are mostly still a film school).

Then, we went to the wedding! This was only my 3rd wedding, and my first one as a now-wedding photographer. It was blast! To sit back and enjoy it fully. Oh, man. My sister was my dance partner the whole night :)

Circle Family Session

I have a really sweet family session to share today! I had the chance to photograph the Circle family a few weekends ago who I've known through Jeremy for a couple years now. Alissa, who owns Rags To Stitches Boutique, teamed up with me to do a big giveaway on her blog in honor of my new site launch! (Click here if you haven't seen it yet!) We also decided to do a session of her family to show on the RTSB blog as part of the giveaway. Alissa picked this great location hidden away in some hills near Costa Mesa, and I was pretty entranced by it! Trails, mountains, and thick dead grass...my kind of place! It was one of my first times shooting a whole family together with little ones, and I think I got some really great moments! You really have to be "on the fly" when shooting, and keep your eyes peeled for signs of the dynamic of the family. They were so relaxed, and the kids were really sweet! + How cute are they all together? Thanks Circle family!

Andrea: Senior Session

This post has been a long time coming! I've been so behind on blogging and really wanted to get this one up before I went mad thinking about it! I am so grateful to share this amazing senior session I had with Andrea. We've been friends since our young teenage years, so it was really great to shoot her college portraits for her. First thing I think anyone can say about Andrea is that she has a heart of gold. So committed to her faith in God, its so unwavering! She is truly inspiring to be around. She just graduated from Biola in accounting, and is taking on the world with her big new grown up job at Deloitte! What an amazing accomplishment. We had fun going around her future work place, snappin' some photos, and taking it all back to biola. We even went out for crepes after.

So, thanks Andrea for a great day! Its a great privilege to photograph a friend! (And so fun!).

Kari & Richie Wedding in Beautiful Sonora!

Check out my gorgeous client Kari on her wedding day! I traveled up to Sonora, Ca for Kari and Richie's wedding and was a little dumbfounded at all the gorgeous redwood trees everywhere! Lisa Senior Session

Today I have a recent senior mini session to share with Lisa, who I went to school with since...junior high?! Its been a long road, and shes graduating college! I was thrilled to take her senior photos, as I've done her brother's wedding in the past as well. We trekked up to a cool park, and walked up some great paths to some beautiful views of the hills and city. And let me just say, huge props to Lisa for hiking around in some killer green heels! She didn't complain once and was really great to work with. A relaxing session made easy. Thanks, Lisa! And congrats on graduating!

I'm always excited to get new toys to help me with my photography, so when I went to WPPI this year with one goal in mind (find a new camera bag) I was ecstatic to find a Jill.E bag I loved! I had heard about them online somehow, and really wanted a bigger bag I could have for my weddings to lug around and would fit everything. So here are some photos I took when I got to open it yesterday!

Now all I need is an "everyday" bag. My obsession continues!

WPPI in Vegas

I'm so excited I get to blog about my recent trip to the WPPI trade show from this past February! After sitting at home on twitter last year watching my favorite photographers tweet about being at the show I put my fist down and said "thats it! I'm going next year!" Well, as it came closer, I was swept up in school work and watched my favorite speakers classes fill up. I thought I had screwed up for sure. As the show began and the trade show was about to start in 3 days, I was sitting with my best friend having coffee telling her about how sad I was that I couldn't go. And to my surprise she said that she didn't have anything to do for the next few days. So I drove home (very fast and excited), called my parents for some support who egged me on to go, and got all my pennies in a line and booked the trip. Although I was only there for the trade show, I was still super impressed! I mean, c'mon, we spent three hours just in the first exhibition hall! So much stuff to take in. I got some great information about everything. Fell in love with a Jill. E bag, talked to some great album companies I'm going to start using, and even got some free film from Kodak! (8 rolls of Kodak porta 120. Did I score or what?!). By the time we were on the last isle of the whole show, we were both totally overloaded with information. In the end, it was a great trip. And I'm going to make it a point to see some speakers as well next year! Here's some of my favorite shots from the trip.

The Answering Machine "Lifeline"

When I first got the email from The Answering Machine, a band from Manchester UK, about creating some album artwork alongside my "restrictions" images, I knew I was had to say yes. They seemed passionate about the creation of the artwork, and wanted me to have the freedom to create it. Talk about dream team! Something every artist wants is the freedom to create what they want. Of course, I took into consideration themes, ideas, and lyrical inspiration. But that was easy, because all of their ideas were so good!

As for the music itself, I'm in love! Literally. When the band send along a little package with the CD and T-shirt (seen below) I listened to the whole thing, start to finish, before bed one night. The song writing along with the lyrics just mesh so well, and make you feel like your being serenaded. It does reach a point where it becomes like a romantic breakup, which is sort of calming in its own way. But anyways, I'm no music critic nor do I even know if what I'm saying is true. But buy the CD! Its a great listen and something you'll want to keep forever. It's very timeless.

Buckaway Sisters Session

I have the funnest, most energetic, girl-filled sisterhood session to share with you today! The Buckaway sisters are just all that! I know Chelsea (the oldest) through a friend, and she asked me to take some photos as a surprise for their mom for Christmas. I've never shot a group of sisters (of more than two) before so I was anxious to see how it would play out. But my goodness! My expectations were totally blown out of the water. Having only had one sister, I've never seen a sister dynamic as great as theirs. So much fun, laughter, and silliness went on which made it a really enjoyable session. I felt at ease with them and loved watching them interact with one another. And all with different personalities!

They brought along a set of props that I loved: a triangle banner, mugs with their initials, books, blankets, and a chalkboard (ee!). Thanks to the girls for being so fun and sweet. I'm excited with the way the photos turned out, beautiful girls + beautiful scenery = success. Enjoy the post!

Nikki's College Senior Session

Finally have some time while home for the holidays to post this senior session I did of my best friend, Nikki! I was soo excited to do this for her, not only because it was personal and someone close, but she wanted to go to the flower district in LA, which we have heard much of and are obsessed with the idea of it. Anyways, it did not disappoint. After picking some fresh flowers up for ourselves (of course!) we headed over to Urth Cafe which I had found earlier through yelp.com (yeah, I search for cool coffee houses). We had a delicious breakfast, and did some personal shopping too. Rhodeo drive anyone?! Specifically Tiffany's. A girl can dream...

I am so proud of Nikki for graduating this Fall (she worked hard for it!), and feel incredibly blessed that God has put her in my life. We all know how hard it can be at times to find honest and genuine friends, and Nikki is just that. Thank you Nikki for your friendship and I hope both our future dreams we talk about (all the time) become real. Love you, girl!

Colleen + Kevin

I'm very excited to release Colleen and Kevin's wedding to you today (finally! I know, I've been busy busy busy!). It was a very gorgeous wedding and I am so happy that I was able to photograph it for them. I met Colleen through a friend who had referred me, and she is the sweetest girl! Colleen was so nice and helpful to me throughout the process and would shoot me emails once in a while to check up, or because she had noticed something I had blogged about and liked. Kevin and Colleen's wedding was fun and full of emotion. I especially loved the moment her dad saw her for the first time in the bride's room, I got a little teary-eyed myself! And the reception dance floor was fun as well, I found myself bouncing around with my camera all over! So congrats Colleen and Kevin! Thank you again for letting me be apart of your wedding day!

I have soo many fun things to share about Katlin and Johann's wedding. I went to high school with Katlin so it was nice to meet back up with someone and get to shoot their wedding! Katlin and Johann have been together 5 years (on their wedding day, exactly!) and are so sweet with each other. They were the so laid back during the wedding day and it was relaxing for me, as well. I felt more like a friend than an observer, so that was great. Katlin had seen my "first look" from another wedding, and had decided she wanted to do it as well (much to my excitement! I try and tell all my brides about it). She was still a little hesitant the day of, and asked me to see if Johann still was willing to do it. When I asked him he said "I'll do whatever she wants to do. If she wants to, lets do it." UMM how sweet is that! He was so willing to please her and that just shows their kind of love to one another. Anyways, the ceremony was great, the bridal party was funny, and the reception dance floor was hilarious! Always moving and dancing (and getting a little bit crazy). Enjoy!

Their first look was so sweet. They both said they wouldn't cry, but how cute it was when they did! The natural reaction of both of them was one of my favorites. We even had to end it and separate them because it got a little bit too emotional to handle. Didn't want to ruin too much make-up. I still love these pictures!

Yesterday I had the chance to meet Ashley Lovett at the Santa Monica Pier for some fun photos. She had seen my work through a relative, and was nice enough to volunteer to model for me should I need anyone.

WELL! She was just super nice. We first met up at Urth Caffe in Santa Monica for some breakfast, and got to talk a little bit. We have a lot of things in common! So that was fun. Then we headed to the pier where I've been wanting to take pictures for some time; so glad I did! And, being girls, we walked the promenade. I had never seen it so I was loving all the stores. So clean and nice. Enjoy these photos from the day!

I've been dreaming of owning this lens for almost a year now, and I am soooooo excited to finally upgrade! Here are a few recent edits from my past two weddings. I'm lovin' it so far!

Very gloomy today. My kind of weather! I thrive in the cold. Maybe its my pale skin...But I have a new necessity now for early class mornings. The starbucks frap :)

Also just shipped off a wedding album to a client. Turned out great and can't wait for the 2 other orders on the way! Also in the process of putting together the finishing touches on a proof book. Always hard for me to narrow down 100 photos.

An AMAZING new find today on Etsy. World map decor?!?!? YES PLEASE! I wish I had wall space for it. One day... OH. And of course a shout out to my favorite blog, not only for inspiration for my photography, but for my personal desire for that silly piece of paper that I desire =p Green Wedding Shoes!

And lastly, some freshly baked cookies grandma made yesterday! I can't stop eating them. Explains why the cookie monster is my favorite sesame. And, tomorrow I'm developing my film project's film! Nervous! Its been a while...(I feel old now)

10 things I love about...Thursday! Is now up. Sorry for the delay in the last couple weeks, wednesdays recently have NOT been my kinda day. My art classes are keeping me BUSY! I'm not sure I've ever felt so immersed and flooded with work! But it keeps me busy, and I do like being busy :) Hope you are all having a good week! And enjoy this post.

As you can see, the image on the right is currently what my life feels like. A PILE of reading and books. But what I'd really like to be doing (on the right) is being back in Rome. I miss it.

Also, a current screen shot of a photo I was randomly editing from last weekends wedding (another one on SAT!) and it really is easier to edit to Paramore's "the only exception." Now, let me stop you right there. I'm not a paramore fan, really. But, I heard this song on the radio and instantly connected with it.

I'm also planning a trip to The Getty soon! I've still never been. I know i know. I'm supposed to be this great art student. And I've never been to one of the best ones out there. Also, maybe stop at Sprinkles Cupcakes on the way home? mmmm

"10 Things" Wednesday

I have to admit, today I only have 5 things I love. And that's because the day went by so quickly I only had enough time to finish 5! School has been crazy hectic, added on top of album artwork, and wedding album designing. Phew. Bear with me, lovelies! It may get a little bumpy these next few weeks.

I love tiramisu (and all things Italian) so I've found a good recipe I'm trying out soon.

David + Brittney

When I think about David and Brittney, I think about the kind of love that is patient, relaxed, and loyal. They dated for 7 years before getting hitched, and when we first met I asked them if there was anything special that they wanted photographed, and their response was "whatever you want! we're really laid back and don't mind. We totally trust you." They let me be free with anything I came up with, and that is really liberating for a photographer. Plus, they were the nicest and most calm to talk to and communicate with! The wedding day was just as relaxed as the them! And that is really refreshing to work in an environment that fun. Even though it was sweltering hot that day, no one put up a fuss and it worked out great. One of the best parts was the reception, the guests were so fun to shoot! A super lively bunch. Thanks again to David and Brittney for allowing me to be a part of their special day, and Kelsey Heng, my awesome second shooter who I enjoyed shooting with!

10 things I love about Wednesday!

Happy Wednesday, everyone! Another week come and gone. The days are moving so swiftly on me! I've lost track of my days here in Texas which is very rare for me. I'm always on top of that. Hope you are all having a great week so far; its the hump day! 2 more days until weekend time. Enjoy this wednesday post filled with a kitten, crafts, relaxation, and lots of love!

I wrapped up my last wedding's photos last weekend. And I'm currently working on some album artwork; so lots of paper and brain being used this week!

Also getting very excited for the next semester to start! Got a little juvenile, I'll say. But I do love Hello Kitty. And possibly studying aboard this winter?

My Eat. Pray. Love book inspired me so much. So I made this bracelet from one of my favorite Italian sayings in the book. "L'arte D'arrangiarsi" the art of making something out of nothing. And I do love laying in my bed, being totally relaxed and looking at the beautiful Texas sunsets.

Also, that bib necklace I was inspired by last week; I made! And here is my baby girl Cleo.

Happy Wednesday everyone! I hope you are all having a great summer and are spending lots of time with loved ones. I don't ever want to take summer for granted, and use it as a time to love on family, friends, and do things you would only do in summer. Here's my next 10 things post, enjoy it!

Say hello to our families new kitten, Cleopatra! Cleo for short. I've also done a lot of swimming at home. So refreshing.

Although when Oprah first raved about this book about a year ago, I thought "eh" but since seeing the movie previews, I knew I HAD to read it. I love it so far and can only enjoy it wrapped in a soft blanket (with the fan on, of course)

Some things on my "to buy" list. New pair of heels and motocross boots :]

Cute new knitting pattern a friend sent over, and bib necklaces! I love them.

A new pair of sunglasses. And lastly, but definitely not least! Sweet tea. I can't live without it at home and have gone through 2 jugs already! Eee. Addict?

10 things I love about Wednesday

Today I have another "10 things" Wednesday post, and I'm really happy to share these because I'm all the way over in Dallas, Texas at home. I'll be here for 3 weeks and that makes me really excited. Good to have some time to myself, and my family before school starts back up again.

I have to mention first the things in Texas that really draw me over. My family of course, so here's a couple of them (minus mom and dad). My sister took me shopping and out to lunch recently which was really fun to get to spend some time with her. And here is her dog, Bentlee, who loves me a wholeee lot when I come home.

I made some crafts today, one is a cat bed for our new kitten were bringing home tomorrow! (I know, I sewed a cat bed, sue me! I'm cat crazy). I won't share the name or what it looks like yet, because once I get the kitten you will probably all be saying "another picture of the cat, again?!" Our family is REALLY excited to bring the kitty home.

And I made a camera strap! A friend inspired me to sew one, and I'll be giving one away when I'm back in CA so keep a lookout, they're a cute way to style out your camera!

My other favorite things here in texas are below. One being my bed, which is super soft and comfy. I think thats the first thing I tell most my friends about why I love home. "My bed!" I scream. And of course, the boots. I have plenty a' pair and even though its sweltering hot right now, they do me no wrong. Great to plow through those tall grass fields in the summer :] I love my boots.

I also like to keep you updated on my recent edits, so here are a couple more. These are from the past wedding I did. I'm now on the preparation shots and I don't even know how many times I've shouted "YES!" while editing a picture. Its a great feeling and I'm falling in love with my shots.

And lastly, two very random things I love.

1. traveling. I have seriously been bitten by the travel bug this summer. I am dying to go somewhere. I realize I'm at a luxury to be able to come home to Dallas as my vacation, but I want more! I want something unfamiliar. Hopefully this summer I'll be able to do something; if not, early January!

Veronica + Mom Session

I recently read “Laughter is the spark of the soul.” And I can't tell you how much fun and genuine laughter was experienced between my recent mother/daughter session with my friend Veronica and her mom. They have the kind of relationship that just makes you sigh, and reminds me so much of my mom and I (which is maybe why I love them so much). Its so important to me to photograph people the right way, to catch a glimpse of their character and soul in a photograph; they made it easy. I've known Veronica since elementary school days, and consider her one of my funniest friends (I even tell Jeremy "Veronica will think that's funny" in conversation, a lot!). We laugh a lot when we are together, and seeing her mom and her interact made me understand where she got it from (as well as her cuteness! they look so alike). So I was overjoyed that they asked me to photograph them together for her Dad's birthday. What a fun present! I hope you can spot the genuine-ness throughout the photos. Its magic.

10 things I love about Wednesdays

I realize in my previous "hump" day feature I said how relaxing my Wednesday's are. WRONG! Today was very busy! But I enjoyed every minute of it. First, I went to Disneyland with a friend to take some fun pictures. I've always dreamed of taking pictures there (seriously! if you are serious about modeling/engaged anything for me at Disneyland, email me!)

So first thing I love about Wed, red couches! I love bright furniture and disney had these sweet ones in a cola shop. Also, I couldn't dare to forget: the tea cups. I love dreamy and fantasy things, which is a no wonder why Alice is my favorite (big thanks to Shelby for modeling for me).

Next, recent sessions! I am loving my recent mother/daughter session I did the other day, as well as my Friday wedding. Editing them is a serious joy!

Lastly, new fabric! I'm in the process of whipping up a couple treats to give away on here so stay tuned for those! And of course, Panera Bread. My best friend FINALLY came home from Texas yesterday, and we spent about 3 hours catching up on our summer! So good to have her back.

Saturday Trips

This Saturday Jer and I took a trip down to Balboa Island for one of our classic treats, balboa bars. Balboa bars are essentially an ice cream bar on a stick dipped in chocolate, and rolled in your choice of topping. Jeremy gets the frozen bananas, though. We've been going together since '05 and haven't been in quite some time. So we knew a Saturday in So Cal. at 103 temps was a perfect time to get the cool 77 degree beach weather going. Take a look at some snaps of the trip!

New Feature: 10 things I love about Wednesdays

I have a new weekly feature I'm starting today and I'm really excited about the concept behind it. I needed a new creative outlet to update you all with things I'm up to in between my wedding/portrait posts. A lot of people don't really like Wednesdays, but its one of my favorite days of the week! (besides the weekend, of course) Its the "hump" day, the middle of the week, the halfway mark, and the most relaxing day for me. So I'm going to post some fun pictures of what I love to do on my Wednesdays, and also post any cute finds I see on the internet.

First thing I do have a cup of tea to wake me up, followed by a jog!

I love making lists, and with this weekends wedding coming up, I just go crazy! Its mostly a list of shots that I can't live without. Also, I'm a fiend for making props for my clients. I especially love triangle banners, which I made below for this weekend! It says "bliss"

I love going through old photos and seeing if I've missed anything good. These two photos are perhaps some of my favorites. My two fav boys! Race my cousin, and of course, Jeremy.

Reading is so relaxing to me. I'm currently on "Emma" by Jane Austen. And Baxter, my grandma's dog, usually likes to lounge around the house with me while I read.

A lot of people don't enjoy emails, but I love them! I almost always reply back the same day, mostly out of excitement. A friend also found this super cute camera strap on Etsy that I love!

Belle Noelle Session

Very excited right now to share my recent session I had with baby Belle (my niece) and her momma Manda. She just turned 6 months so I knew we had to do something big, and fun for her, especially since she can sit up now! I had the theme be a little bit sweet, girly pinks and pastels (which Belle looks cutest in!) and tea party-ish. So over the last 3 or so weeks of collecting items, making a ton of paper crafts, and baking some desserts, I was finally ready for Belle and Amanda! Take a look at some shots of them below.

I am so thankful that I had the opportunity and ability to photograph them together so sweetly. I can't wait to show these to Belle one day when shes old enough, and her mom and I can laugh at all the fun times we had getting her to giggle.

Sorry for the lack of updates. I've been home in Texas shutting off the world and focusing on family time. Its incredibly liberating, as I spend a lot of time online from either editing, catching up with other blogs, emails, and researching. Phew! I really hope my eyes don't turn into squares like my mom used to tease me when I was younger =p. Anyways...Today was my mom's birthday! I was super happy to be able to spend it with her here too. I've probably missed her day a couple times since moving. So she took ME to Crack Barrel, my favorite breakfast spot here at home. I know, right? Her day and she takes me. Well, shows how much she does love me. :] Then we shopped around all day taking care of a couple things, and swam and tanned together (although, I never tan. Even if I bake and use special tanning lotion). We went out to dinner and had a good time too with the whole family. It was nice. I leave tomorrow and I'm not looking forward to it! I'm coming back about August time once my weddings slow down again, one week was just not enough!

Um yes... The best place for vintage candy. Drool!

Kyle&Breanna

I am so excited to share with you a couple session (c-sesh) I did yesterday with my good friends Kyle and Breanna. I took photos of them about 3 years ago when I first moved back out to Ca, and that session still holds some of my favorite photos. After this shoot, it blew those out of the water. I'm so happy with my results, and continue to drool over my 5d and its magical powers. We headed over to Shabarum park in Hacienda to get some shots in an earthy environment. The wheat fields were amazing and I loved the views!

Something fun we included in this shoot were these cool wooden palette chairs that Kyle makes. They were so cute and personal to their creative and innovative personalities that I had to have them bring them to the shoot! They were cute and fun. Enjoy!

I made a cute hearts banner in paisley for them to hold with their names on it :]

The chairs are custom made, and involve a really fun design element. Kyle is in the process of making more! Tables, too.

I asked Kyle to take some pictures of Breanna on my film camera while I watched, and I love this sweet moment of them laughing together. Cute!

This was actually a mistake when I took it, but I could not have been happier with a goofy shot. I love it!

It's been a while for me and self-portraits. My 365 ended almost a year ago, can you believe it? I can't... It seems like something that happened farrr away from now. I decided I should curb my habit of hiding behind my camera, which I have been doing since I ended my 365. So I stepped out into the sun in my grandma's beautiful backyard. More to come, hopefully!

I'm really loving the blurred close object compositions. It creates a focus and draws my eye to what the subject is more clearer.

I am still amazed by my 5D. A little obsessive, I guess. Why didn't I upgrade sooner!!

Bridal Show Pictures

Yesterday was my first bridal show at the El Prado Golf Club in Chino. I had my best friend Nikki help set up that morning, and I am so grateful she was there with her helping hands and great design eye. We had fun checking everything out at the show (can you say chocolate fondue?) and chatting with brides. I learned a lot from my first show (like how small shows can go SO wrong. I was given a "booth" with no backing. Even though I was told I had a curtain to hang photos. Luckily the director was nice enough to switch me with a cake person who I found out later was pretty mad. opps!) Anyways, it was a good first experience, and I can see where a lot of revenue and appointments can come in with bigger shows, which I hope to do next (BrideWorld is amazing). A lot of vendors there were friendly with me, and some advised me the best way to "get in" was to smooze other vendors so they would refer you. I like the sound of that! Anyways, enjoy my display.

New Album Cover Sleeves!

I've been crushing my brain (i know, not really a nice thought is it?) and working like a horse finishing up my bridal show display. Its really fun amidst the craziness, and has brought me to new ideas about my presentation. So again, I'm here today to show off another little goodie my brides receive when they either purchase or choose a package that has an album in it. Its a cute new "sleeve-type" cover for you to carry around and show off to all your family and friends! Each bag is sewn unique and features a bow enclosure on top! Fabrics will include a variety of quilt squares and others sewn together. Since this is just a sample sleeve, in the future I note to sew inside a little thicker fabric to house the album and keep it safe from bangs and bumps it may encounter.

I know this isn't my usual post, but I'm so excited I have to share it on here to you all. I've been dreaming about riding a motorcycle for about a year now. And now that I'm hooked on the supercross, I had to make it come true. So I just wanted to post a photo of me and Jeremy in our full gear :]

Work space and Packaging fun!

I'm excited to show off some new packaging ideas I'm offering my bride's! Its not all finished yet, but it will be before my May bridal show! I think the best part about my business, is that I am obsessed with weddings. Really. Ask my best friend Nikki. Its all we talk about! Anyways, I try to relate how I would want to be treated into what I do, so I think its important to treat the bride and groom and shower them with nice things they deserve and can remember. I love the idea of surprising them with things they didn't expect, which is the fun part of it all.

All prints are wrapped in cello to be protected during shipping or moving. After this, they are wrapped in tissue paper, sealed, and packed carefully in a photo box!

This is just a fun banner I'm sewing together for the bridal show :]

All packages that get their negatives will receive a cute eco-friendly kraft box, and a USB card! CD's are great, but the images start to deteriorate after time. And USBs don't. Plus, they are re-usable! So fun. PS. I love that "tiffany" teal. Melt.

I'm in the process of creating my own "office" space. I realized that I sit too much in my room and do all my handling on my desk, but it creates a negative mood for my room. Moving it into the back sewing room and having to go outside to get to it leaves me the excitement of going to my own space. Much more positive!

New 5D

I recently purchased a Canon 5d for my birthday! I got it just as I came home for spring break, and I am soooo excited to use it. I know a lot of people say, the body isn't important, the lenses do. And I agreed wholeheartedly. But I've changed my mind now. Now that I have the 5d, the quality in my photos has just sky-rocketed from what it used to be. Maybe it won't look like it to you, but it makes all the difference in my eyes. I am so much for confident with my new full frame. So, really, with the whole body vs. lens debate, I'd say you need both. Once my magical shock of this new camera wears off, I'm going to be itching for some L's. You really just need it alllll!

I am pleased to blog today about my most recent wedding with friends Jeff and Ashley Darcy! They had a small and intimate house ceremony (the bigger wedding is over summer!) and they had kindly asked if I could take some photos of them! Their first date was at the Disney Concert Hall in LA so we trekked over there. I had never been there before but fell in love with the structure. Sometimes strong architecture design like this one isn't really well suited for wedding photos, but I knew that it fit their personalities. Jeff and Ashley are both very sweet, kind, and low-key people. So I knew the best way to capture their love was through small and intimate looks and touches. I was very happy with the outcome. Enjoy!

I wanted to post another picture of my TLR. Still love looking at it, haha. Ok maybe I'm a little crazy. My first roll of film should be scanned next week. Thankfully, I have a friend who has a negative scanner. Saves me a lot of money at the printers after realizing one of them isn't even focused. I should really invest in a negative scanner/printer. Birthday wish list definitely.

I'm in my school library right now, killing time on my 3 hour break. And what do I do? Head straight to flickr. I was reading another Photographer's blog (via Keaton Andrew's twitter post) because he had posted a "tip" for other photographers. I laughed and bit back my smile in the library at how heated people were getting. Taking jabs at each other, geez! Poor Keaton. He had suggested to people not to go to art school, which got people all fired up. I can imagine why for some...you go to school for photography, its your final year, and then someone just says..."Hey, you wasted 4 years! Congrats!" I know that's not the effect he was going for, but I can understand why people may have been a little antsy about the subject. As for me, I think it really all depends on the person. If you have the drive to succeed and do well, I think going to school can be beneficial for you, with a Photo degree as will not getting one. I know some people can "make it" with Photography by not going, and hey, hats off to you. Seriously. I respect those people and admire their courageousness. That really is risky. But for me I would love to have a degree. It's been branded in my brain that "I need a degree" to get somewhere. My parents have encouraged it all my life, and there's nothing wrong with that. I like school. I've learned a lot of things with photography from personal experience AND educational experience. I'm confident in the path I've chosen (it will be SO different for everyone else too). There's nothing like hearing your own dad say to you on the phone "just remember me when you're famous, ok?"

I'm so thankful for my family and their support in this crazy and somewhat unrealistic career. They're my motivation.

Fun craft

I've been on a little photo break for the time-being, as you may have noticed. I think it's incredibly important to fully saturate your mind with inspiration, and with all the whirl wind of things I've been doing over my Christmas break and post-365, I wanted a chance to do just that. So I've really just been spending my time being a stalker online. And by stalker I mean looking at everything! (not gossip) Magazines, blogs, business pointers, etsy, other photographers, and just really trying to get a sense of where I want to go now after my 365.

But in that time I've been doing fun projects to keep me both entertained and inspired. Heres a headband I made while I was at home in Dallas.

But, today was really a breaking point for me. I think I've finally broken through my barrier. After seeing our schools new Artist of the month that is now in our gallery, and hearing her lecture of how she got to where she is today (and mind you, her work really just isn't my style, but i TOTALLY appreciate it in its form. its beautiful) I fell in love with the idea of really being a complete artist. and I mean a "triple threat" artist in a sense. Like how performers are truly great if they are a triple threat; sing, dance, act. I'm not saying that you can't be one sole master of one type of art, but I was raised by my dad to truly be a master of whatever is in my path. It really affects my life and my competitive life as well (luckily not with those who I love). Therefore, I think I would like to encompass multiple forms of art. Whether it be paintings, crafts, photography (of course), ceramics, drawing. I love all of it and I think that has totally blown my mind and created new inspiration for myself.

So, I'd like to ask you, what are you planning on doing in the future for yourself? Whether or not your an art major! I want to hear how all of you are keeping yourself inspired or if you have any plans for your "career"

There is nothing quite like sitting in your favorite bed, in your favorite house, far away from reality. Although I've left half of me with a special someone back in CA, its always refreshing being home. Like I just had my first breath of air. My mind is always buzzing but it seems to lose its cloudy forecast when I'm home, and I get more inspiration from those kinds of thing, in everything. I think my conscience just becomes more and more declared when I'm home that this may be where I want to be in 10 years. I don't know. I push those thoughts out of my mind a lot, I don't know why, instinct I guess. Anyways, lets get past my journal entry and skip to the good stuff. I decided one of my "goals" this year was to get a little bit more creative with the things around me. So I decided to decorate my own mug. I love personalizing things. So heres a couple shots of my vampire inspired mug :] I think I may have gotten a little carried away. One things for sure...no one will be drinking out of my bloody cup!

This shoot was so incredibly fun to coordinate! We shot it at the local theater depot down the street. The dressing room was just the type of atmosphere we were looking for, and I am so thankful the director let me use the space! We were even talking about a possible show for me so that is exciting! Nothing better than doing one in your hometown. I had to paper mache some masks, which I haven done since elementary school! 6th grad to be exact. And then painted them white.

it seems like i'm always messing about, waiting for something. i'm so impatient its ridiculous. waiting for my first blurb book to show up, waiting for my goodies i've ordered to send them out with for people who buy them, waiting to start my new series, waiting to start school, waiting to graduate, waiting to get married...omg the list goes on and on. i'm in such a rush, aren't i? but life seems so slow now that it's summer and i can relax. literally, i've never been more relaxed. i work for myself in freelance, the most relaxing job i can think of. but it never seems enough. i guess i'm never full satisfied. i hope most people go through this so i'm not alone. i've much needed a small rant, for now. mind vomit=over.

I've never done one of these box things. But I thought it appropriate for my lack of drive for today. I had planned for another flickr post today, but due to my lack of drive and somehow "losing track of time" (yeah yeah yeah...excuses) I was unable to. It required going to the store to get my supplies and well- i just didn't feel like it. I had a senior session today and waking up so late makes me lose time I guess. Tomorrow I'm going down south to San Antonio! Very excited to go. So now I will put it on hold (this idea).

I DID, however, buy myself a flip camcorder to video tape all my future endeavors. Including my new project I'm starting which will take time, and man-handling of building skills. I'm creating sets. WOO!

here i am, a week into my summer visit to home. i'll be honest and a little complain-ey and say its both the best and worst trip ever. i'm definitely having more fun than i usually do, mostly because my parents are home more often and we're doing fun things, but it's the worst because each time i have time to myself to reflect upon it, my heart breaks a little more knowing i'll be leaving. i wish things were different. like that i could stay in texas with my whole life in CA to come with me, but life is never that easy, is it? i take a deep breath every time i reflect upon this sadness.

later tonight, after i've had a nerdy reading session, i'll post a short and quick stop motion video! i've never tried it before, so it'll be fun. and ill ONLY be posting it on this blog, no where else :]

i think i'll start visualizing some more ideas soon. time is always running out.

i'm enjoying every bit of being home. sleeping in the best bed know to human kind. seeing movies with my dad, catching SOME sun, and not all since i burn too easily, and being with my kitty. i miss him. i'm already dreading leaving. i'm so torn. it's hard to part with my family because i love them, and am close to them. it seems like it gets harder every time. i'm hoping this next semester of school i'll be able to see them more often. i think i will.

well, as far photography, i'm still kicking butt finishing a CD layout. i had no idea it would be so time consuming. BUT, i'm loving the results. hopefully you'll get to see it very soon! i'm having a small creative breakdown as well. its like the "oh crap, 365 is over, what do i do now?" except...i know i want to continue doing creative things with self portraits, or just in general. but i just need to gather myself and mind, and let it be known it can breathe for once and take the time to create something. i struggled with that so much in my 365. each day suffocated my creative thoughts, so that none was even there. i know what i'm capable of. and i'm not satisfied with myself yet.

i just arrived at home in dallas, texas last night. so pleased and incredibly grateful to be here! i have two homes, and its difficult. this is me and my precious kitty; napoleon. named after napoleon bonaparte because he is small for his species as well =p. today i woke up at 12pm, went swimming with my sister and mom, had a nice summer lunch, and sat around. if summer could get any better...well, i dont know if it can be. i'm throughly looking forward to all the crazy things my family and i will do, including ATV rides, San Antonio vacation, and trips to places i love. today i took my sister's senior pictures (both crazy and weird to do because shes all grown up now...well...sorta =p) and did so at a cool orchard. visit my flickr stream to get the update. all her friends want them now too! cute. :]

since the end of my 365, i've been working on editing past commissions, working on a brand new CD for a client, and starting my blurb book. that will be such a big project. how do you narrow down so many photos?! well, i will!...eventually. i hope to make it and sell it all for a reasonable price! hopefully blurb.com will be good to me :] i've also got some jewelry companies sending me some pieces of their's for me to model. SO FUN!

my boyfriend has been so inspirational to me, about what to do next with my Self Portraits on flickr. And we've come up with the PERFECT thing. Can't wait to start and show you all. It will be very different.

YES! Finally, it has come in the mail. I was contacted in January about being on the cover of an Italian version of an English book here in the US. So, my first debut is now in Italy. So Fun! and so cool to actually see. :D :D

Well I definitely have been keeping myself busy. Too busy. I'm always looking to overload my schedule, even if it hurts. I just finished figuring out my forms for the Italian book cover! (eee) So those will be sent off tomorrow to the lovely IRS. And my gallery ideas are coming together. Now...where to find them? Hmmm. I'm excited to be done with my 365! It means I get to work on my "best of" book for all you who can't come to the gallery! Yay. And! I found out I'll be home on my final day! Funny because my first day of my 365 was me going back home as well :] Good timing.

I've been putting a lot of time into my school work...and I'll probably have something good to show for it =p but man, its really put a plug into my recent updates. I have ideas, and just have a lack of motivation for completing them successfully. Its like I already expect myself to fail. I get lazy and the time in editing is spent as quickly as possible. And thats not right. Thats not how I progressed from the beginning. I'll be trying to put more work into my fashion "book" as well! Gee there I go overloading myself again :]

I did a friend's wedding today. It was all of my emotions into one day! I was happy, I teared up, I was a little annoyed, and I was sad. I had a good friend, Jacque, second shooting today and I am so thankful she did. I probably would have melted if not. The pictures look GREAT so far, so hopefully in the next couple of days you'll see some shots. Jacque has my other 365's on her cam so those will be up to. They are silly!

I'm aching. Sore legs! And sore camera snapping finger ;]

These lights were in a beautiful hallway! And I had to stand next to them. They were prettier in person. And the grain on this terrible, but I love those lights too much.

i am now 20 :] thanks for all the birthday wishes yesterday! you are all very sweet :]

I've had a near-perfect day today! I slept in, woke up to sweet pea flowers, a pink cake, and loving cards from family. I also was taken for afternoon tea at the Huntington (my favorite place!) and now I get to see my "other" family, the Pritchard's, and see what the bf has in store for me :] So far, all I know is Jazz kitchen! :]

And tomorrow will be even better. Art Museums! (i <3 art too much) and a dinner party with friends!

(i was not murdered.) i said i would dip into my roots! textures, brown tones and plain wall... :]

my school has an artist in residence this week ( Sandow Birk ) who is painting a public project LIVE for Catalina Island's lifeguard apartment building. Its a huge mural on tile and I was so incredibly inspired by it. It was lacking the kind of inspiration I normally am inspired by, but just being able to watch a real artist work and answer questions is something i really enjoyed. Everyday for 6 hours this week he'll be painting it in hopes to finish it. Makes me want to paint on tile myself...There are so many revenues in art that I want to try with photography. Galleries, things like this and fashion, its so hard to choose. All are inspiring. So for most of this week my art classes will be visiting him working, awesome! I love art.

today while i was taking another 365, laying on the dirty floor with white paper around me, and sequins thrown into my hair, i thought to myself "wow, i am so weird." think about it, 365'ers. everyday you go around doing odd (or normal =p) things, accidentally causing scenes or weird questions in public, and then sometimes, like today, you think to your self "what am i doing?" its become such a habit now that i'm actually a little worried about what it'll be like when i'm done. there will definitely be more time in my life. more space for curiosity and concepts. but wow. a self-portrait artist, huh?

i've been so stressed this past week. you can tell physically because i tend to break-out! oooo the wonderful things of being a girl. tests, papers, busy work, outside work, gallery work, social work! gah. but....i'm taking strides to reduce this, because i know that i bring on the majority of this stress. over-piling my week and such.

Just for fun. Easiest way to describe my method is just....cross-processing layers, contrast layers, vignette, color fill layers adjustments, and lots more adjustments! a good edit can really save a photo.

how incredible is this field? one of the most beautiful mustard fields i've seen/experienced. had to hike up 3 different slopes of mud to get to the top and it was just breath taking! thanks to veronica for trekking up there and being my mode today! more to come of her...
